CWE is more than a resource; it’s a community that meets you where you are and helps you see what’s possible.

What inspired Dorothy’s business?
Dorothy Fennell was inspired to start CargoB by her lived experience navigating city life as a parent and transportation professional. As a mom of three school-aged children, she encountered a daily gap in urban mobility: most short trips were easily bikeable, yet still required a car when hauling groceries, gear, or kids’ essentials. With a lifelong passion for people-centered, multimodal, and sustainable urban design, Dorothy saw an opportunity to rethink how cities move. CargoB emerged as a practical, family-informed solution to make car-free living more accessible, equitable, and realistic for everyday urban trips.
Business Highlights
Since launching in May 2024, CargoB has reached several notable milestones in a short period of time. The company has grown its fleet from three to fourteen electric cargo bikes, begun generating revenue, and expanded its customer base across Metro Boston. CargoB has also established meaningful partnerships with municipalities, institutions, and public agencies, positioning the business as both a mobility service and a climate-forward urban solution. Most notably, CargoB has already replaced more than 4,000 pounds of urban car miles with zero-emission trips, demonstrating measurable environmental and community impact.
How has CWE helped Dorothy in her journey?
CWE played a critical role in helping Dorothy transition from the policy world into entrepreneurship. While she had deep expertise in transportation systems, launching a startup required new skills, structure, and confidence. Through monthly one-on-one coaching and a multiweek business training program, CWE provided the roadmap Dorothy needed to move from concept to execution. The organization’s mentorship and practical guidance helped her build sustainable systems, clarify her business model, and confidently step into the role of founder—turning a community-rooted idea into a scalable venture.

How does she feel about owning her own business?
Owning CargoB gives Dorothy a deep sense of pride and purpose. She finds fulfillment in watching a solution born from everyday challenges evolve into a service that improves how people experience city life. There is empowerment in knowing the business reflects her values—equity, climate resilience, and community connection—and tangible joy in seeing people choose a CargoB bike over a car. For Dorothy, entrepreneurship is not just about running a company; it is about shaping a future she believes in and contributing meaningfully to her city.
How has building her own business changed Dorothy’s life?
Building CargoB has fundamentally reshaped Dorothy’s relationship with work and possibility. After years of working part-time while raising her children, she questioned whether she could fully return to a career she loved without sacrificing family balance. Starting her own business challenged those assumptions. The process pushed her far outside her comfort zone, strengthened her resilience, and reinforced the idea that growth often comes through discomfort. Most importantly, it allowed her to pursue ambitious, meaningful work on her own terms.
What has creating a business of her own done for Dorothy?
Creating CargoB has given Dorothy a sense of agency and alignment she had not experienced before. It has proven to her that she can identify a community need, take a calculated risk, and build a viable solution from the ground up. The experience has been deeply affirming—both professionally and personally—showing her children what it looks like to commit to values, persevere through uncertainty, and create change. The business has become a source of confidence, purpose, and long-term vision.
She wants you to know this about CWE
Dorothy wants people to understand that CWE is far more than a traditional business resource. It is an ongoing community of mentors, peers, and experts who meet entrepreneurs where they are and help them see what is possible. CWE provided her with clarity, confidence, and continued support beyond the formal program, making it a lasting partner rather than a one-time stop. Because of that experience, Dorothy actively recommends CWE to other women considering entrepreneurship or navigating their own business journeys.
