CWE helped me strengthen the foundation of my business—from refining my strategy and marketing plan to offering one-on-one coaching, cohort-based peer support, and tangible help with becoming a certified women-owned business.

What inspired Melissa’s business?
Melissa was inspired to take over Merry Go Rounds from her mother, Beth, after recognizing its potential to be more than a retail store—it could be a practical, values-driven alternative to the wasteful, disposable culture that dominates consumer habits. After years working in nonprofits focused on global health and inequality, she felt drawn to apply those same principles of equity and sustainability at the local level.
By stepping into the family business, Melissa found a way to align her personal values with her professional life, creating a tangible impact in her own community. Merry Go Rounds became her vehicle for showing that families can shop affordably, reduce waste, and stay connected locally—all while participating in a circular economy that benefits both people and the planet.
Business Highlights
Merry Go Rounds is a women-owned, multigenerational children’s consignment business with deep roots in the community. Its Easton location has served local families since 1989, and in May 2025, Melissa expanded the business by opening a second brick-and-mortar store in Dorchester, Boston. Beyond the stores, the business also sells through social media and at in-person markets and events.
As a Massachusetts Public Benefit Corporation and certified B Corporation, Merry Go Rounds extends the life of tens of thousands of children’s items each year—offering high-quality goods at affordable prices while providing consignors with an additional source of income. The business has become known for its commitment to excellence, joyful shopping experiences, and meaningful social and environmental impact.
How has CWE helped Melissa in her journey?
The Center for Women & Enterprise has been a steady and adaptable partner throughout Melissa’s journey as a business owner. CWE supported her in strengthening the foundation of Merry Go Rounds by helping refine her business strategy and marketing approach, ensuring the company’s growth was both intentional and sustainable.
Through one-on-one coaching, cohort-based peer support, and technical assistance—including support with women-owned business certification—CWE provided both practical tools and a sense of community. For Melissa, CWE has been a trusted resource and a network of women who understand the realities and challenges of entrepreneurship.

How does she feel about owning her own business?
Owning her own business is an emotional and deeply meaningful experience for Melissa. She describes it as an ongoing mix of empowerment, anxiety, pride, and joy—often all in the same day. While the responsibility can feel intense, it is balanced by a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment.
What motivates her most is the ability to build something that reflects her values of sustainability, community, and connection. Despite the challenges, she finds deep satisfaction in shaping both the business and the impact it has on families and the environment.
How has building her own business changed Melissa’s life?
Building Merry Go Rounds has reshaped how Melissa views work, leadership, and success. It has taught her resilience and reinforced the idea that meaningful growth often comes from navigating challenges rather than avoiding them.
The business has also more deeply rooted her in her community. Through relationships with customers, consignors, employees, and fellow small business owners, she has developed a strong sense of belonging and connection that extends far beyond the walls of the store.
What has creating a business of her own done for Melissa?
Creating her own business has given Melissa a profound sense of purpose and independence. It allows her to use her creativity and strategic thinking every day while continually learning and evolving as a leader.
The business has also become a collaborative family effort, with loved ones contributing across operations, design, strategy, and day-to-day support. This shared involvement has fostered a collective sense of pride and ownership, making Merry Go Rounds not just a business, but a shared mission.
She wants you to know this about CWE
Melissa wants people to know that CWE stands out for its flexibility and understanding that no two businesses are alike. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all solutions, CWE tailors its support to meet entrepreneurs where they are.
She values both the informal, one-on-one guidance and the cohort-based programs that foster connection and shared learning. For Melissa, CWE is not just a resource provider—it is a community that genuinely supports women through every stage of their entrepreneurial journey.
