Nursing a Desire for Entrepreneurship
In 1988, Liora Stone and her husband Peter were young, just starting out in the working world, and decided to try their hand at entrepreneurship. They purchased a building and a few small assets of the 2-person metal fabrication shop where Peter had been employed as a welder/fabricator and established Precision Engineering, a certified woman-owned advanced metalworking contract manufacturer... As a registered nurse, Liora worked both as a nurse and in the business for the first few years. As the company grew, she left nursing to focus on the business full-time. “Over our 31-year history, I’ve developed new business skills that have helped us to grow Precision Engineering to a multi-million-dollar enterprise, serving businesses of all sizes and types—from small businesses to global Fortune 100 companies, in varied industry sectors.” Precision offers numerous capabilities from laser cutting (up to 1-inch thick) and punching to powder coating with 5-stage pre-wash and hardware insertion.
“Participate and Prepare!”
Precision Engineering became WBENC certified at the request of one of their large corporate partners. For the first few years, they didn’t really take advantage of the many and varied opportunities that WBENC had to offer. However, as Liora began to attend more events and participate more actively, she started to develop both corporate and WBE relationships that helped her to grow her business. After all, “at its core, all business is about relationships.” Through meeting with ‘the corporates,’ Liora learned about their ‘pain points’, and was able to grow her company in ways that met those needs—making her company more ‘value-added’.
“With fellow WBEs, I’ve established a support group of like-minded entrepreneurs – strong women who lift me up when I’m down, raise me higher when I’m succeeding, help me to think through tough decisions, and help to ‘spread the word’ about my company...and, occasionally, our businesses also do work with each other.”
“WBENC opens doors. It’s our responsibility to make the most of these opportunities.
